Our history

Founded in 2008, Contis provides end-to-end banking and payments solutions. Its mission is simple: to empower companies and people to realise their vision – in business and in life.

Everyone’s needs are unique. That’s why we opened our end-to-end platform and alternative banking technology to enable companies to build their own solution – with our support every step of the way.

This might be providing alternative banks with a complete current account (with Direct Debit, Faster Payments, debit card etc), umbrella payroll companies with a remittance platform or companies with access to Faster Payments infrastructure.

The platform is fully owned by Contis and is PCI DSS Level 1 compliant, which means we don’t rely on multiple third-party providers (eg. BIN sponsors, card issuers, payment processors) for its delivery. We have an eMoney licence, agency banking agreement and are principal member of Visa (with an ability to sponsor those looking to issue Visa products).

Corporate social responsibility

The Centre for Social Justice cites financial exclusion as one of the main causes of social exclusion

For almost ten years, Contis has been at the forefront of the Credit Union movement, having created a current account product specifically for this sector. Applicants are not credit checked and can receive their account, with Contis’ award-winning Envelope Facility™ budgeting capability, typically within two minutes.

The Problem

In the UK, 11% of low-income households still don’t have access to bank accounts. The rise of high interest lending has also led to 7 million households in the UK unable to access affordable credit. This financial exclusion, coupled with poor money management and a lack of savings, are all key drivers of social exclusion in the UK.

The Solution

Contis is working with the Credit Union movement, providing specially-configured current accounts with award-winning budgeting and cash-back features to address these drivers of social exclusion. Together with Contis, Credit Unions not only provide responsible lending and high-return savings accounts, but current accounts that help customers take charge of their finances.

What we make possible

Contis’ award-winning Engage account addresses these challenges in the following ways:

Financial inclusion

To combat the 11% of low income households that still don’t have access to bank accounts, Contis can issue a current account with sort code and account number within two minutes of application. The application process is very simple, with no credit checks. Just a standard AML proof of identity required to open an account. Direct debit functionality also helps customers secure the lowest utility tariffs.

Better money management

Universal Credit and other reforms are causing major issues, with almost 80% of Universal Credit recipients in arrears on their home rental payments1. Contis’ Envelope Facility™ functionality allows funds to be ring-fenced for specific expenses such as rent, utility bills, food and/or savings. Envelopes can be set up and managed online or through Contis’ mobile app.

No need for high interest lending

Contis’ Engage current account aligns with Credit Unions’ ethical savings and responsible lending to remove the need of high bank charges (overdraft fees, admin letters etc).

More saving opportunities

It’s been estimated that 40% of adults have less than £500 of savings to withstand financial shock2. The combination of Contis’ Envelope Facility™ budgeting tool, standing order functionality, Credit Unions’ financial advice and high return savings accounts increase the likelihood of families ‘saving for a rainy day’. Contis’ platform also offers savings at everyday spend merchants equivalent to over £500 a year through its rewards and cash-back programme3.
